THE RCA AGA 2008 IN TORONTO
CELEBRATING 128 YEARS!
Thursday, June 12 to Sunday,
June 15
The 128th Annual General Assembly
of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, with its focus on Art and Architecture,
will be celebrated in Toronto from June 12 to 15, 2008.
During the AGA, we should reflect on the RCA mission -
to celebrate, to encourage and to facilitate!
We will start our events at the Moore Gallery with a Vernissage
of new members' work, as well as work by RCA artists represented by the
Gallery. We will tour Hart House, which boasts a permanent collection
of some of the best in Canadian art. At New College, designed by the late
Macy DuBois, Past President RCA, we will meet for a drink and an Architectural
Exhibition in his honour, hosted by George Baird, Dean of the Faculty
of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto. We
will attend the Second Annual John Bovey Memorial Lecture - Great City/Great
Art - presented by Matthew Teitelbaum, Director and CEO of the Art
Gallery of Ontario, followed by a Panel Discussion where he will
be joined by Visual Artist and Professor at Emily Carr, Landon Mackenzie,
Architect and Principal of Teeple Architects Inc., Stephen Teeple and
the Globe and Mail's critic Lisa Rochon. During the Gallery Crawl,
we will tour some of West Queen West's most interesting galleries starting
with the Angell Gallery and ending at the Gladstone Hotel for drinks.
On Saturday, we will meet for the Annual General Meeting, where
all the members will participate in discussions about the future of the
RCA and be introduced to the Visual Arts Alliance. After the meeting,
we will all gather for the Annual Luncheon on the grounds of New
College. Following that, we will attend Michael Snow's Presentation
of his work. The AGA will culminate with the Presidents' Dinner
on the Trading Floor of the Design Exchange, where the new members will
be inducted and the RCA Medals awarded. As part of this occasion, there
will be an Exhibition of the Self Portraits submitted by the membership.
On Sunday, we will conclude the AGA with an Architectural Tour,
visiting four of Toronto's most provocative and innovative buildings -
the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Opera House,
and the Gardiner Museum.
With its multitude of cultural activities, Toronto is a stimulating place for the members of the
RCA to explore and experience a vibrant art scene.
