RCA Disciplines 1880 to Today
The 1970’s marked major changes and growth for the Academy. A new constitution in 1973 abolished the associate status and allowed an increased number of members (the original limit was 25 as Academicians and fifty as Associates). New categories of membership, beyond the original list of painters, sculptors and architects, were created for Academicians in film, photography, design and the crafts.

Today the RCA has over 700 Members in a variety of disciplines. New disciplines - multimedia, and installation to name a few - are being added to the membership with the advent of new media and as the boundaries between disciplines blur.
